Dark textured oak chest

AI concept for a dark-stained oak chest with a fine herringbone texture over the front and lid, a brass latch plate, brass side handles and chunky faceted feet. For a study, library or living room, holding keepsakes, records or games; our workshop in Riga cuts the texture, stains the oak and fits the brass hardware.

The idea images on this page are AI concepts — design ideas, not photos of finished work; final construction and scope are agreed for your project. The photo marked “Real work” is from our workshop.

Real work from our workshop

We built this tree-of-life oak chest by hand in our workshop in Riga: carved front, dovetailed corners, a fitted lid and a hand-finished inside — the same work behind every chest on this page.

Decisions to make

Texture

The concept shows a fine herringbone over the front and lid, cut by our CNC router. Fine vertical ribs, a grid, or texture on the front only are alternatives. Deeper cuts throw stronger shadows but hold more dust, so we agree the depth on a cut sample.

Stain depth

Dark stain on oak runs from deep brown to almost black. The darker it goes, the more the texture shows through light on its ridges rather than through the grain. Samples are stained with the texture already cut; compare them in daylight and lamplight.

Brass hardware

The brass latch and side handles are fitted, not made in our workshop, and sourced to suit the size and weight of the chest. A latch that locks, different handles or a lid stay can be sourced instead, confirmed per project. Send photos if the brass should match fittings in the room.

Suggested uses

A study or home library

Letters, documents, photographs and keepsakes under one lid beside a desk or bookcase, in a chest that sits with dark wood shelving and leather chairs.

A record collection

Sized so records stand upright in their sleeves, with dividers if you want them, and a lid that keeps the dust off between listening.

Board games and cards

In the living room, games, cards and puzzles go in out of sight, with a lift-out tray on top for dice, pieces and score pads.

Members' lounges and hotel libraries

A dark, quiet piece for a reading room or bar lounge, storing games for guests or spare blankets.

Materials and options

Materials and finishes

  • Dark-stained oak (as in the concept)The stain darkens the oak while its grain still shows, and the herringbone texture catches the light across the surface.
  • Lighter stains on oakFrom mid-brown to natural, the grain and texture show more strongly; we stain sample boards so you can compare.
  • Walnut, unstainedNaturally dark brown without stain and finer in grain, so the texture reads more softly than on oak.
  • Brass hardware (as in the concept)Brass darkens with handling unless lacquered; we tell you which we source.

Personalisation

A family mark or initials engraved inside the lid, or small on one end; engraving cuts through the dark stain to lighter wood, so it reads clearly. For a lounge or library, the venue's mark can go on the back. Agreed on the drawing.

From request to production

  1. Your briefTell us how you will use it, how many you need and whether you want a logo.
  2. Drawing and 3D reviewReview the design from each side on a private page.
  3. Quote and approvalPrice and scope agreed before anything is made.
  4. Prototype or productionFor a series, one prototype first; a single piece is made once approved.

The drawing lays out the inside around what the chest will hold, such as records upright or games on a tray. Before the chest is stained, we cut the texture on a sample and stain it, so you choose the texture and stain depth together.

What to send us for a quote

  • What it will hold, such as records, games or documents, and roughly how many
  • Room photos, and the furniture or shelving it should sit with
  • Texture: herringbone, ribs, grid or plain, and on which faces
  • Stain: dark as shown, lighter, or unstained walnut
  • Hardware: brass as shown, a latch that locks, or other handles
  • Dividers or a lift-out tray inside

Questions

Can the chest hold a vinyl record collection?

Yes, if it is sized for them: the inside height and depth must clear an LP sleeve, about 31.5 cm square, standing upright, with room for fingers to pull one out. Records are heavier than they look, so tell us roughly how many; the base and feet are confirmed per project.

Is the herringbone texture hard to keep clean?

It holds a little more dust than a smooth surface, more so with deeper cuts, and a soft brush clears it. If the chest stands where dust settles, a smooth lid with the texture on the front only is an option.

Can the feet be changed?

Yes. The concept shows chunky faceted feet in the same dark oak; a plinth, short square legs or a slim steel base suit other rooms. Taller feet bring the lid closer to hand and leave room to clean underneath.
