Oak storage chest with steel frame
AI concept for a dark oak storage chest with a matt black lid, a band of fine grid texture across the front and a slim black steel sled frame. For hallways, living rooms and studios; our workshop in Riga makes the oak body and welds the frame on one floor, to your size.
The idea images on this page are AI concepts — design ideas, not photos of finished work; final construction and scope are agreed for your project. The photo marked “Real work” is from our workshop.

- Space measurements and photos, what goes inside, furniture to match
Real work from our workshop
The steel frame is welded on the same floor where the chest is built, so the frame and the box are made to fit each other.
Decisions to make
Frame height and finish
The frame lifts the chest clear of the floor. A low frame keeps it compact under a window; a taller one brings the lid closer to hand and leaves more room to clean beneath. We draw the height against your sill, radiator or sofa arm and agree the steel colour on a sample.
The black lid and the grid band
The design pairs a dark oak body with a black lid, and adds a band of fine grid texture cut across the lower front by our CNC router. The band can be narrower, cover the whole front or be left off, and the lid can match the body instead.
Sitting on the lid
A chest by the door often becomes a place to sit while pulling on shoes. Whether this lid may be sat on is confirmed per project, from its size, thickness and frame, so tell us if you plan to. If not, our oak bench concept is the piece made for sitting.

Suggested uses
Hallways that need hidden storage
Hats, scarves, dog leads and shopping bags go under one lid by the door, and the frame keeps the oak off a wet winter floor.
Living rooms beside the sofa
Throws, board games and spare cushions out of sight, in a piece that sits with steel-legged tables and shelving instead of looking like a box.
Studios and small offices
Cables, chargers, samples and the things a reception desk has no drawer for, kept in a chest that looks like furniture to visitors.
Materials and options
Materials and finishes
- Dark oak body (as in the concept)The smoked look is a dark stain agreed on a sample; the oak grain still shows through.
- Matt black lidPainted in our spray room for a flat colour above the oak, or made in the same oak as the body for a single-wood chest.
- Other woodsNatural oak or ash for a lighter hallway, walnut for a warmer brown, birch or maple for a pale chest, black alder for a reddish brown.
- Slim black steel frame (as in the concept)Welded from slim square tube on the same floor as the woodwork and painted black; another painted colour can be agreed on a sample.
Personalisation
Your initials or a small mark engraved below the lid, on one end or inside the lid. For a studio or shop, a logo can go on the frame as a small cut-steel plate. Agreed on the drawing.

Questions
Can the chest stand without the steel frame?
Yes. The same oak body can sit on a wooden plinth, on short feet or straight on the floor; the frame is what makes it read as modern furniture. We draw the option you prefer before anything is cut.
Can it match a table or bench with steel legs?
Yes. The frame can use the same steel profile and painted colour as a table or bench, such as our oak dining table and oak bench concepts, and the oak can take the same stain. Send photos of the furniture it should sit with.
Can the inside be divided or have a tray?
Yes. A lift-out tray resting on runners near the top keeps gloves, keys or chargers apart from bulkier things below, and fixed dividers suit a studio storing samples. We lay out the inside on the drawing.
