Illuminated planet display models
A set of five illuminated planet models made as display pieces in our Riga workshop. The set includes Venus, Earth and Mars in different sizes, each with a planet surface on its shell and a light inside.

White Nordic makes custom display models in Riga, Latvia. This project shows planet forms presented together on black ring bases. The photographs include the complete set, a red Mars model and an Earth model with blue oceans and green and sand-coloured land. Each view records a different part of the finished appearance.
The short clip adds a detail a still photograph cannot show: the Venus model is lit, switched off and lit again. Use the photographs and clip as references for a new brief, identifying the surface appearance, relative sizes and lighting effect you want to discuss.
What we made
Each model is a shell with the surface of its planet on the outside, set on a black ring base, with a light fitted inside. The models come in different sizes, from the large Venus and Earth to the small grey worlds at the front. The clip shows the Venus model lit, switched off and lit again.
A planet model can be part of an exhibition, a learning display or a themed event. Think about whether people will see one globe close up or a group from across a room, and whether the surface or the light should be the main feature. Include the space available, where people will stand and any reference images for the planets you want. Our display models show other replicas and figures if your idea goes beyond planets.
Materials and finishes
Each model is a shell with the planet's surface on the outside, a light inside and a black ring base. White Nordic works with wood, metal and plastic, so the shell, the base and the surface of a new model are chosen together as part of its design.

Questions
Which planets are shown in this project?
The photographed set includes Venus, Earth and Mars among five models. The individual views show Mars and Earth, while the short clip shows Venus with its light on, then off, then on again.
Can a model show another planet or our own surface design?
Yes. Each shell carries the image of its planet on the outside, so a new model can show another planet or a surface you supply. Send the reference image, the size you need and whether it should light up.
Could I commission one planet rather than a set?
Yes, White Nordic makes individual display pieces as well as series. Identify the planet, overall size and surface reference you have in mind. A drawing and private 3D review precede production, and a series begins with one prototype.
Are the models shown to a common astronomical scale?
The models come in different sizes, and no common astronomical scale is claimed for them. If the relative sizes matter to your display, include that requirement with the overall space available and the planets you want represented.
How should I describe the lighting effect I want?
Refer to the clip and say what you want viewers to notice when the model is lit. Include information about the intended setting and viewing distance so the effect can be discussed with the rest of the design.
What should I include in a planet-model enquiry?
Send reference images, the intended size, where the model will stand and whether it should light up. State how many models you need and any requirements for their bases. The quote is agreed before anything is made.
