About this piece

The head of the gavel is a short cylinder in a dark reddish-brown wood, with a grooved collar at each end and softly rounded edges. A slim round handle joins it from the side. The sound block below has rounded profiles too, from a wide round base up through a sloping shoulder to a flat top where the gavel strikes, and its lighter, warmer tone shows the grain all the way round.

Auctioneers, club chairs, school councils and debating societies keep a gavel and block at the table to open and close an auction, a meeting or a ceremony with one sharp knock. With a name or a date engraved on the block, a set like this also makes a lasting gift for someone taking or leaving the chair.

We make the head, the handle and the block in our workshop, so the profiles can follow a classic shape or your own drawing. Oak, ash, maple and walnut are all options, and the head and the block can be in contrasting woods. There is no minimum order: one gavel as a gift, or a series for a club, a school or a chain of venues.

Questions

Can the gavel or the block be engraved?

Yes. A name, a date or a short dedication can be engraved around the side of the block or on the head of the gavel. You check the wording and the layout before anything is engraved.

Can we order the gavel without a sound block?

Yes. The gavel and the block are separate pieces, so either can be made on its own, or a block can be made to match a gavel you already have. Send a photo and measurements if you are matching an existing piece.
