Real work: a small clear box with a hinged lid, made in our workshop

Real work from our workshop

Clear acrylic boxes and lids are made in the same workshop as our woodwork, so a wooden box can take an acrylic lid cut to fit it.

Decisions to make

Lid groove and fit

The acrylic lid runs in grooves cut into the box sides. Wood moves with humidity and acrylic does not move the same way, so the groove has a small allowance: too tight and the lid sticks in a damp shop, too loose and it rattles. We test the fit on the prototype.

Scratches and care

A clear lid shows fingerprints and fine scratches, most of all along the path it slides. A finger notch keeps hands off the middle, and a soft, damp cloth keeps it clear; abrasive cleaners do not. Stack boxes so lids do not rub.

A divider around wrapped products

The divider is sized around wrapped chocolates or inner packaging, never loose unwrapped food, and the depth is set so the lid clears the tallest piece. The grid can be even, as in the concept, or mixed, with one long cell for a wrapped bar.

Suggested uses

Selections that sell from the shelf

Customers see the whole selection through the lid, so they choose without opening a box or asking staff to show them.

Client and hotel gifts

The person receiving it sees what is inside before sliding the lid, and the oak box stays on a desk afterwards for cards or keys.

Seasonal and numbered editions

The same box with a new selection each season, or a short run with an edition number on each box.

Tea and other wrapped samples

Wrapped tea sachets, small jars or other packaged samples, laid out so the range is read at a glance.

Materials and options

Materials and finishes

  • Oak with a clear acrylic lid (as in the concept)Oak holds a clean groove for the lid to run in, and its warm colour frames gold or coloured wrappers.
  • Other woodsAsh, birch or maple for a pale box that makes dark wrappers stand out; walnut for a darker, more formal one.
  • Coloured acrylic lidA see-through lid tinted in a colour from your packaging still shows the selection, more softly.
  • Wooden dividerThin strips of the same wood or a contrasting one, sized around the wrapped pieces; fixed or lift-out.

Personalisation

Your logo engraved on the front end of the box, which faces out on a shelf, or on the acrylic lid, where it reads as a frosted mark over the selection. An edition number can go on the underside. Position is agreed on the drawing.

  1. Your briefTell us how you will use it, how many you need and whether you want a logo.
  2. Drawing and 3D reviewReview the design from each side on a private page.
  3. Quote and approvalPrice and scope agreed before anything is made.
  4. Prototype or productionFor a series, one prototype first; a single piece is made once approved.

The drawing shows the grid, the clearance under the lid and the groove. With the prototype in hand, you load your own wrapped pieces, slide the lid on and off and judge the selection through it before the series.

What to send us for a quote

Questions

How is this different from your wooden chocolate box?

The chocolate box concept has a wooden sliding lid, so the selection is a surprise. This box has a clear acrylic lid, so the selection sells from the shelf. Both are sized around wrapped products, and the grid and groove are drawn the same way.

Does the acrylic lid scratch?

It can, as any clear surface does with handling. Wipe it with a soft, damp cloth, avoid abrasive cleaners and store boxes so lids do not rub. For a box opened daily on a counter, a wooden lid may suit better.

Can the box hold unwrapped chocolates?

We size the divider around wrapped chocolates or inner packaging such as cups or a tray, as in the concept. The box is not made for loose, unwrapped food; your own packaging goes inside it.
