About this piece
Inside a thin round frame, the design is built from a bold capital letter, a portcullis grid, spiky bat wings and a skull with a sword through it. The main shapes are cut right through the plywood, while finer lines on the sword, the skull and the letter are engraved into the surface. The coaster repeats the whole design at a smaller size, down to the grid and the wings.
A fretwork emblem has a depth that a flat print does not, which makes it a good wall piece behind a game table, a sign for a club room or a keepsake handed out at a tournament or a themed evening. Matching coasters or tags in the same design turn one emblem into a set, and plywood keeps every piece light.
Fretwork like this is cut by laser cutting, and the fine detail is engraved in the same workshop, in plywood, solid wood or acrylic. Questions
Can our own emblem be cut in fretwork like this?
Usually, yes. We redraw it so that every part left after cutting stays joined to the frame, and very thin lines may be widened a little so the piece holds together. You see the result in 3D before cutting.
Can the same design be made in different sizes?
Yes. The emblem and the coaster in the photo share one design at two sizes. Once the design exists, it can be scaled for coasters, wall pieces, tags or badges, with fine details adjusted to suit each size.
